Curtis is the daughter Carmencita Ojales, a Filipina originally from Bolinao Pangasinan, and James Ernest Curtis Smith, an Australian lawyer. Her birthplace was Yarrawonga in Victoria, Australia. Her father got married Ojales at the age of 22 in 1982. Her younger sister, who is also an actor, is her father. Clare is a cousin of theirs on the father's end. Clare passed away at 4 months of age in 2007 after suffering from an illness of the heart.
